Ongeveer 15 cm groot.

Koper, messing, alpaca.

Broche - fibula type met schelp

Fibula, zilver met schelp en gelaserd acryl.

Hanger van Zilver, in de stijl van het Warhammer Fantasy universum.

Gedreven en licht gezwart zilver, met een ratje uit de Plague-Monks set gegoten in zilver.

Zomerbroche

Een zomerse broche.

Het begon met een handje vol materiaal, dat in mijn laatje lag, een stukje brons, een halve steen en een schijfje zilver.

Zo gaat het meestal.
Ik kijk wat naar buiten.
Neem een kop koffie (espresso met suiker)
Praat wat met de konijnen, en blader een boekje door.

Langzaam vallen de stukjes metaal dan op hun plek, en in mijn hoofd
onstaat een vage vorm van hoe het gaat worden.
Mijn handen gaan aan de slag, en vaak verteld het materiaal me hoe het nu verder moet.

Nooit te strak of te star, of te machinaal...
Het moet eruit zien alsof het toeval er iets mee te maken heeft.
Iets organisch, iets levends.

Liefst met een boel patina.

Zoals dit dus.
Het plaatje brons heb ik stevig door de mangel gehaald- gebeiteld, heet gestookt en met kopergroen bewerkt.

Het mooie strakke plaatje zilver gehamerd, met drijfvormen bewerkt, en dan gezwart én weer licht opgeschuurd...

Ringetje erop, steen erop, messing laddertje erop.

Iceni Torq bracelet

Yesterday, I felt like making a thin, plate-based torq.

I twisted a hammered strip of new-silver, and added roped copper and brass wire inlays.

Next, I soldered silver end-bushings.

A chemical blackening-agent was used to darken the metal and a surface polish was used to lighten up the top-surfaces.

Smeed demo Groninger Zilverkamer

Op 29 November was IVAK aanwezig met Duco de de Klonia, smid én cursist bij IVAK, en Douwe Medema, goudsmid en leerkracht bij IVAK.

De kwaliteit van de door de cursisten in vitrines uitgestalde werkstukken oogstte bewondering.

Duco geeft hier een demonstratie in de techiek van het zg. "Raising" , het tot een bol "krimpen"van een plaat brons.

Het doel is het maken van een schaalmodel van een Griekse "Corintische"helm uit 500 voor Chr.

Dit is een zeer langdurig proces, waarbij wel er veel controle over de vorm verkregen wordt.

Celtic wrist Torc ( Torque )

Celtic brass and copper wrist-torc (Torque)

The Torc (also spelled Torque), or neck ring, was an important piece of Celtic jewelry, and was worn before 1200 BC to as late as 600 AD. It was a powerful symbol, perhaps representing the wearer's free-born status, and was often complemented with additional rings worn about the arms and wrists. Torcs were made from copper, bronze, silver, and gold. They were worn by both men and women, and are depicted as such in both Classical and Celtic sculptures.

Zoomorphics, or animal forms, were very popular with the Celts. They were used to represent deities, natural and supernatural forces, and personal qualities. The animal heads are placed on the torques so they appear upright when worn.

This one was made of twisted copper and brass wires with brass endpieces.

It is a flexible piece of kit and you easely put it on and of your wrist.

Vuurstenen pijlpunt scan met David SLS-2

Reproduction arrowhead made by flint knapping expert Bernard Ginelli form the Prehistoparc in Les Eyzies, Dordogne, France.

The arrowhead was mounted in on a plastic tube to support it  during scanning on a small turntable.
For scanning I used the David SLS-2 that proved to be excellent for this job.

Objects from 40 cm high to only 4 cm can be scanned amazingly good and fast using structured light.

This scan is a "textured" scan so both shape and exterior color is scanned.
A scan like this can be shown in 3D plus printed in color with modern 3D printers.

The scanprocess I used is shown in some videos on my Youtube channel .
Using the name PiXiS 3D consultancy I assist companies on their way to implement 3D scanning and printing in their line of work.

Reproductie pijlpunt, gemaakt door vuursteenexpert Ginelli van het Prehistoparc in Les Eyzies, Dordogne.

De pijlpunt werd in een plastic buisje gemonteerd en middels een draaiplateau in 12 stappen gescand met de David SLS-2 structured light scanner.

Deze scanner is in staat objecten tot 4 cm nauwkeurig te scannen.

Deze scan is een "textured"scan, waarbij ook het uiterlijk wordt meegenomen.
Zo kan een scan dus ook in kleur worden bekeken en eventueel aan de andere kant van de wereld in kleur worden uitgeprint met een 3D printer.

Het 3D scanproces en de bewerking van scans wordt op mijn Youtube kanaal duidelijk getoond.

Viking pendant cast in silver

Viking pendant, cast silver, blackened

I have some interesting Viking motifs I am keen to cast.This is the first.

It has a 3 cm diameter and is 2- 3 mm thick.

I sand-casted it, then blackened it with chemicals and lightly brushed the outside with a steel brush to give it that marvellous antique shine.

Cleaning fish

Silver nail cleaner, inspired by the Romans

This is  a nail cleaner, just like the ones the Romans used, centuries ago.

You can always tell whether Romans, and more specific Roman women, have lived somewhere. If so, artefacts like these will be found all over the place.

For this piece I used a left-over scrap of silver, already looking a bit fishy - it was more or less fish-shaped.

I hammered it a bit to "blow" it up - give it some volume and used several chisels to add detail.

I'll probably add a little hole in the top of the shell to make it a pendant.
 

3D sugar beet

3D Biet in Kleur from terra-arte on Sketchfab.

Yep, this is a sugar beet, captured with 123D Catch en a Canon Powershot S3 camera.

The newspaper provides the engine of the Autodesk servers with reference points.

I made this scan for a FabLab client, who needed a 3D print of a sugar beet for an art project in the Kunsthal, Rotterdam.

I have many ideas for a whole series of "Warp Nexus" jewelry, rings, bracelets, etcetera.

Fibula - Hanger combi

Een Combi-Fibula...

Daar hadden ze wel van opgekeken, want deze speld, in goed Latijn "fibula" werd niet als sierhanger gebruikt.

Voor een klant heb ik er ooit een extra ring aangemaakt, zodat je hem om kan hangen als je niets te spelden hebt.

Deze is losjes gebaseerd op het model dat de Vikingen droegen.

Hij heeft een diameter van 5 cm. en de boog is gesmeed van Nieuw-zilver (ookwel Alpaca genoemd, een wat rare naam voor een metaal...) en de speld met het ringetje is van Sterling zilver.

Via Etsy of mijn Luondo shop te bestellen, maar ik maak er geen 2 precies hetzelfde, dus altijd een unicum.

This is a 3D scan of a replica Roman oil lamp, done with the NextEngine scanner at FabLab Groningen.
You can do a scan yourself, so come to visit the FabLab.



FabLab is open every day for the public from 9:00 to 13:00.
For only € 10,00 you are able to use machinery like 3D scanner, 3D printer and lasercutter, and get assisted by professional  (all volunteers/ enthousiasts) personell.

For some machines and materials you have to pay extra, but hey, big deal!

Well, it was time for another test... making an eye-pendant.
I took some stuff  from the good old leftover box and created a great piece with a genuine Viking-look.

Early version Sykes-Fairbain knife

I've made some knives in the past, but only kitchen knives of the Roman kind.

I know some knivesmiths use waste chainsaw chains for making Damascus steel.

I'd like to give it a try with some chainsaw chains that have been living in my workshop for a long time...

What I want to make is not easy, and I'm likely to fail.

It's because of the shape that I want to make a "Sykes-Fairbairn" WW2 fighting knife.

It has a famous past as it was the weapon of choice for the elite "commando" troops that raided the coasts of occupied Europe from 1940 to 1944.

One of my fathers uncles (my father was born in the Netherlands, but most of his family was German...), a German soldier guarding the Atlantic Wall, was killed by a commando, his throat sliced with this weapon.

The cruel practice of "silent killing" is told here by a former member of the commandos on camera at the National Army Museum.

(It's always fascinating to hear old soldiers talk... watch the look on their faces when they tell their horrific experiences...)

Anyways... I got the original drawings of an early version of this knife.

Ok, I got the great idea to convert a Ork Warboss ( the Black Reach one)  into a so-called "Big Mek"

That's a tech-guy....

I had to rip off his original head, and it had real sharp teeth!

Notebooklets

Lasercut notebooklets, the right one is laser-engraved

I took some cheap but great simple styled little notebooks and made a present for my kids.

The right one is not lasercut, but laser-engraved, and the result is a more subtile effect, more suitable for artwork.

You can vary the dept of the engraving, and the power-output of the laser, to gain a darker effect.

I even engraved a brick with some words and a QR-code...

I plan to cut them on demand with all kind of text and namework...
